A Hindi-language biographical drama film based on the 2019 namesake non-fiction book by Anurag Pathak. 12th Fail is the true life story of IPS Manoj Kumar Sharma, who overcame extreme poverty, broke the shackles of societal barriers, and with tremendous efforts passed the UPSC examinations, one of the most prestigious and toughest examinations in our country.

Coming from an underprivileged family, Manoj grew up witnessing poverty, humiliation, and deprivation. Corruption was part and parcel of people in his small village in Madhya Pradesh and even the government employees and teachers were corrupt and dishonest.

This film portrays an ordinary man’s extraordinary journey in achieving his dreams of becoming a hardworking and honest law enforcement officer. The lead character of the film, Manoj Kumar Sharma, played by actor Vikrant Massey, remained inexhaustible in his hard work and did not give up even when circumstances became too much to tolerate. His goal was one and clear – his dream to become a police officer, and his commitment – to bring about a change in his family’s financial and social status.

Awards and Accolades

The film, after its release in October 2023, has received much love and appreciation from its audience, with critics declaring it brilliant. The 12th Fail movie’s budget was approximately 30 crore rupees, which it surpassed successfully, grossing an approximate 69.87 crore rupees at the box office.

The film was initially released in theatres in Hindi and Kannada languages. After its success in the Hindi language, the film was dubbed into Telugu and Tamil languages and was released in November of the same year.

At the 69th Filmfare Awards, the movie bagged five awards, including the categories of ‘Best Film’, ‘Best Director’, and ‘Best Screenplay’ while its lead actor, Vikrant Massey won ‘Best Actor (Critics).’ 12th Pass film has been sent to the Oscars as an independent entry.
